Fatherless Day Poolside Cocktails

by on Jun.20, 2012, under Food & Cocktails, Parties & Gatherings

This is a bit late…

For Father’s Day, my dadless friends and I drank tropical cocktails, floated around a Palm Springs swimming pool, turned about five shades darker, told amusing stories about our long-gone dads, and barbecued slabs of meat.

To cool ourselves in the desert sun, we chomped on frozen grapes, and also used the grapes as a garnish for our drinks. Two of our easy-peasy quaffs: a screwdriver with muddled grapes and the Gold ‘n’ Stormy, a mix of golden rum and ginger beer. (You’re supposed to use dark rum to make a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, but oh well. Golden rum works too!)

So, happy belated papa’s day to all the men out there who are fatherly to anyone…

Desert Bound

by on May.17, 2012, under Other Lovelies

We’re flying out to Palm Springs in a few weeks to hang with our close buds at their summer rental, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Palm Springs is completely rad. Utterly, completely and elegantly rad.

Mid-century modern architecture, stellar vintage stores, canopied bars and lounges, palm trees preening in the desert waste… It’s very glam in a blassé kind of way.

To ready my suitcase, I rounded up some fashion inspo…

Metallic shoes, retro print dresses, tiny rompers, bold and patterned things that cling or flow from the bod… This is how Palm Springs looks and feels.

{Wander Away} Palm Springs: A Foxy Vintage Store in the Desert

by on Jul.29, 2011, under Quirky Places

My galpal and I motored to Palm Springs for a weekend of sun, leisure and lady bonding.

We basked like lizards by a desert pool and drank $4 Indian-casino cocktails. It was perfect.

Our best discovery during the trip was this cuhhrazy vintage shop called The Fine Art of Design.

The store is a treasure chest of designer and non-designer castoffs from rich or funky Palm Springs octogenarians. Flowery ’60s dresses, Victorian-esque frocks, vintage Louis Vuitton – whoa my gawd, we had died and gone to sweet, upscale thrift-store heaven.

The prices are far lower than I expected – compared to the overhyped vintage stores in L.A. and San Fran – and the merchandise is in perfect condition.

Luisa, one of the owners, said she gets the clothes from her personal collection (she’s a vintage junkie) as well as from dealers and local residents wanting to lighten their closet.

TFAD co-owner Luisa. She gave us lots of personal attention, espeically since we weren't sure how to wear many of the clothes! She's a sweetheart.

I don’t hit up many vintage stores these days, but this fun shop has renewed my interest. Check it out if you’re ever in Palm Desert.

A gorgeous Alexander McQueen dress and vintage headpiece.

P.S. There’s a seriously cute, puffy white dog who patrols the store and watches for theft. I think her name is Nina. Adorable.
